State Of Mind Can Change Your Experience
Our state of mind and the stories we tell ourselves can literally create our experiences. Our thoughts are so powerful that they can take us down the path of a good experience or a terrible one.
Approaching labour with my 5th daughter, I had been made to believe that my cervix wasn’t dilating. This was a huge shock for me as I had not once thought my body wouldn’t know what to do to birth my baby. Yes it has been 10 years since I had last given birth but surely my body had’t forgotten…. So I started to get in the headspace that I was going to encounter trouble in my upcoming labour. The anxiety grew more and more and I genuinely started to believe my body couldn’t do it.
The days leading up to my labour I started to envision my cervix opening and when I decided to pull my magical oracle cards around this situation, to my delight out flew the full moon card. This card couldn’t have had more meaning! It is a picture of the beautiful illuminating full moon with a gushing of light flowing from it. I read this as my fully open and dilated cervix and my baby girl flowing out. I started to back into a good frame of mind. These cards are never wrong..
I was in the very early stages of labour and nothing was really happening. My waters had broken over 24hrs earlier and I was worried id have to be induced. I started to spiral in my head with the thoughts of my body had forgotten what to do, it was going to be one of those horror birth stories and the fear kicked in. Luckily for me, I had been blessed with a truly divine midwife who of her own accord picked up on where my head was going and ever so gently guided me out of that negative space. She didn’t have to do much, just some positive words and reminding me of how magnificent the female body is. She chose the right things to say that stopped my spiral in its tracks and I once again felt calm, empowered and excited to meet my baby girl.
After a lot of coaxing and yes needing to be put on a very small dose of the sytocin drip, my beautiful baby girl was born in an hour and a half long labour and out in one swift push. I was calm, in control and so positive and clear the entire time, listening to my body and softly allowing her to open gently and do what she needed.
My labour could have gone a totally different way had I succumbed to my fears and anxiety. Thank goodness for wonderful birth support!
